Leandro Barbieri, better known as Gato Barbieri, was a jazz tenor saxophonist and composer from Argentina. He rose to fame during the free jazz movement of the 1960s, during which he released records like 1967's Obsession. Evolving with the times, he began to include elements of soul and pop into his Latin jazz recordings in the 1970s. He Continued to produce modern jazz on records like 2010's New York Meeting well into the later years of his career. In 2016, Barbieri succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 83.
