New Riders of the Purple Sage is a country rock band that initially emerged out of the psychedelic rock scene of San Francisco in the late 1960s. Formed by a few like minded musicians--including members of the Grateful Dead--who were inspired by alternative, beatnik and folk culture, the New Riders played a number of shows around the San Francisco Bay Area before entering the studio to record its 1971 debut LP. Though the group has undergone many lineup changes and a long hiatus, the New Riders of the Purple Sage has nevertheless carried on and continues to make a unique style of psychedelic-tinged country rock.
