Born into a musically inclined family to folk singer parents, Willy Mason is an Americana singer/songwriter who was discovered on a local radio station on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Associate and friend of Conor Oberst, Sean Foley heard Mason on the radio and subsequently signed him to Oberst's new record label, Team Love. Mason released his 2004 untitled EP, later named G-Ma's Basement, with the label and has since toured with bands such as Death Cab for Cutie and Radiohead and played the world's most renowned festivals including Glastonbury and South by Southwest. He followed his 2004 debut album Where the Humans Eat with a tour of the US before assembling a band that featuring vocalist and viola player Nina Violet and mandolin player Zak Borden. With his new backing band, Mason released his follow-up album If the Ocean Gets Rough, in 2007.
