Dick Brave and the Backbeats is the rockabilly side project of singer/songwriter Sascha Schmitz, who goes by the alter ego Dick Brave. The band started off as somewhat as a joke, as the members, inspired by Australian alternative rock band Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, actually took on the personalities and mannerisms of their Australian counterparts during live performances and interviews. Dick Brave and the Backbeats ended up releasing the 2003 full-length album Dick This!, which included rock and roll covers of Michael Jackson's "Black or White" and Pink's "Get the Party Started." Dick This! became Schmitz's most successful record among his six studio albums. After taking a break from his alter ego starting in 2005, Schmitz returned as the hip-shaking Dick Brave in 2011 to release the band's second album, Rock'N'Roll Therapy.
