Russian master playwright Anton Checkov's last play ever was "The Cherry Orchard." Ranyevskaya is an aristocrat who has been in living in isolation for many years when he returns to his homeland. Upon arrival, he finds that his home and beloved cherry orchard will be sold in order to pay of the debts of his family. Love must ultimately clash with ambition, and a traditional lifestyle must, too, conflict with modernity. Part of Checkov's mastery in play writing was his ability to make conflicts universal, which allow his plays to remain pertinent generations after their original production.
