One of the quintessential bands of the 1970s disco scene, The Bee Gees was a pop group formed by brothers Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb. The Australia via England-based trio started performing together in the late 1950s, while the brothers were still in school. By the early 1960s, they had founded the Bee Gees name and began penning Beatles-esque pop songs. It was the transition to blue-eyed soul in the coming years, however, that would put the group on the mainstream radar for decades to come. The Gibb brothers caught their biggest break when disco erupted in the United States in the 1970s, as they adapted to the slinky rhythms and nightclub sheen of the genre's particular sound. Scoring Saturday Night Fever, a smash hit film starring John Travolta, the group hit gold with a number of singles that remain synonymous with the disco era, such as "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever." In 2003, Maurice died of complications from an intestinal problem, causing Barry and Robin to shut down The Bee Gees for the first time in over four decades. In 2009, however, the two reformed and decided to proceed with a reunion, reigniting the career of one of the best-selling pop groups of all-time. Sadly, Robin Gibb passed away in 2012 due to complications with cancer.
