During the formative years of the Scandinavian nations, the various regions were presided over by a good deal of nomadic folk who traversed the countryside and lived a meager existence that typically waxed and waned with the seasons. Because of this banal and lurid existence, the folk inhabiting the Scandinavian area relied on their traditional folk music to lift their spirits and interject happiness into their dreary and tundra-like lives. Though most, but not all, of the nomadic tribes have disappeared - a product, no doubt, of rural flight - a few decedents of these erstwhile people have taken it upon themselves to recreate the music in an extremely modern way. Case-in-point: Afenginn. The Danish group plays Nordic folk but it also intertwines elements of modern instrumentation to give its sound a fresh, contemporary feel. The band's shows are rousing affairs and when people start dancing to the infectious tunes, there's no telling where the night's sonic journey will lead.
