From a very early age, Roy Hargrove knew that he wanted to be a professional musician, a professional trumpeter to be specific. He honed his skills as a child and because of his dedicated disposition, he was accepted to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. However, during his tenure at the music school, he was more often found in dingy New York jazz clubs than in the academic halls of the college. The jam sessions that Hargove sat in on during this time proved invaluable, though, and after dropping out of Berklee, he moved to New York and made a name for himself from the ground up. Since his formative years, performing for free in the back of some jazz dive, Hargrove established himself as a formidable trumpet player and has even played with notable musicians like Erykah Badu, Common and John Mayer.
