Brooklyn duo Japanther began making music in 2001, after meeting while attending school at the Pratt Institute. Fusing together pop punk, electro samples, lo-fi noise and a general pop sensibility, Japanther has slowly but surely built an underground following. Though the band hasn't received wide acclaim, this lack of pressure to please has allowed Japanther to experiment with various types of music and visual performance art, which the group often incorporates into its oftentimes untaditional live performances; the band has performed with a synchronized swimming team, a shadow puppet collective and the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art.
