DJ Toure is the DJ for Oakland-based rap crew, Hieroglyphics. With that main project, he has been releasing material and touring steadily for over 20 years now. His love for beat-making began at an early age, when he played drums in a church band, and as he got older, this passion for percussion transformed into experimentation with drum machines, samplers and eventually, turntables. Toure's beats, both in his solo work and with Hieroglyphics, are eclectic in their source material, as he works elements of R&B, funk, jazz, gospel and even rock into his tracks. The whole thing is still decidedly hip-hop, however, and his ingrained sense of rhythm makes his work a perfect template for the plethora of MCs and artists he's worked with over the years.
