A member of the Holy Modal Rounders, which would prove to be one of the more bizarre psych-folk projects of the 60s, Peter Stampfel is no stranger to outsider music. Now well into his golden years, the Brooklyn native hasn't seemed to have lost an ounce of that adventurous spirit, performing regularly in a number of incarnations that usually revolve around the unique timbre and delivery of his vocals. The Ether Frolic Mob is a stripped-down collaboration between Stampfel and a revolving cast of musicians, in what amounts to a psychedelically-tinged bluegrass jam session. Banjos, fiddles, violins and old-time percussion combine with Stampfel's oddball persona, making this somehow one of the more traditional stops in a truly eccentric career.
