Anzac Day became a public holiday in the early 1920s, marked by the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli in 1915. War veterans are remembered in Brisbane's inner city by a number of ceremonies, beginning at dawn, with a service at King George Square and peaking with the street procession. This parade of returned servicemen, their relatives and a number of marching bands takes place before a massive crowd. There is a 30-minute service held in Anzac Square, after which the pubs open their doors and everyone has a drink and a game of Two-Up. The ceremony is broadcast on television.
