INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE of HAMLET performed by Teatro La Plaza (Peru)INTERNATION THEATERJuly 19 & 20 at PS21 PavilionHamlet, boldly reimagined by Chela De Ferrari, founding artistic director of Peru’s Teatro La Plaza, adapts Shakespeare’s classic for a group of young actors with Down syndrome. Expressing their desires and frustrations as people whose lives have historically been devalued and ignored, the actors interweave their own stories with the original text to invest new meaning in the play’s central existential question, “To be or not to be?”Blending personal monologues, classical drama, pop music, dance and wry humor, Teatro La Plaza’s Hamlet offers an eye-opening and provocative look at questions of inclusion and discrimination – making us question our own perceptions and values, but ultimately presenting a joyous celebration of life and theater in all formsCopresented with the 2024 International Hispanic Theater Festival of MiamiABOUT THE ARTISTChela De Ferrari served as the artistic director of Teatro La Plaza until 2021.
