To mark the 900th anniversary of the birth of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Royal Fortress of Chinon recreates the atmosphere of a 12th-century royal kitchen. In the center of the room, tables host an accumulation of utilitarian culinary ceramics: jugs, glazed pitchers, decorated bowls and other dishes. A few luxurious objects add a royal dimension, such as a terracotta gourd of Syrian origin. Dummy foods bring this composition to life, allowing us to imagine that the Queen of England's clerks have just left the kitchen. These foods are the vectors of royal luxury: poultry, fish, very white bread, fruit, lots of spices and dried fruit, and sugar, considered a very rare spice.
