The Elbhangfest is one of Dresden's festive highlights. Founded in 1990 to celebrate the saving of two churches, Loschwitzer Church and Maria am Wasser, the festival now celebrates the history, culture and natural beauty of the hilly region between Loschwitz and Pillnitz on the River Elbe. Over 100 different events are organized, ranging from long-boat races to concerts, ballets and readings. The festival lasts the whole weekend, starting with a parade on the Saturday and culminating in a huge firework display on the Sunday.
