Every year on January 25th, people all over Scotland, hold Burns Suppers to celebrate the birthday of the country's greatest poet, Robert "Rabbie" Burns. Traditionally, the "chieftain o' the puddin' race" (haggis) is carried in to the rousing sound of bagpipes, toasts, speeches being made and songs sung. Everyone present then feasts on haggis, bashed neeps and chappit tatties (mashed turnips and potatoes), washed down with a wee dram of whiskey. Burns Suppers take place in various venues - private homes, Burns associations, pubs, restaurants and hotels. Although some are more traditional than others, a good night out is guaranteed.
