The life and death of locally born Liberal heroine Mariana Pineda is commemorated every year on May 26 on the eponymous square. Various cultural activities and entertainments are organized during the day to highlight her contribution to the nation's political development. She promoted the Liberal cause during the 19th century, for which she was consequently sentenced to death by the ruling monarchists when she was discovered embroidering a Liberal banner in 1834.
