Descartes a Kant is a bit of an anomaly in the Mexican rock scene. Resistant to be pigeonholed, its music is a creative but odd joining of genres as far-reaching as cabaret, noise rock, country and punk, resulting in often polarizing receptions from listeners in its home country. The Guadalajara six-piece's music has resonated with many American indie rock bands, including Explosions in the Sky, Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, all of which have welcomed Descartes a Kant to share a bill with them. With a heavy interest in music as performing art, the band's shows regularly feature its members in costumes and makeup and include strange set pieces that change throughout the performance. Paper Dolls, the group's first album, was released in 2007.
