The Italian-born Domenico Scarlatti spent most of his career as a composer for Spanish and Portuguese courts. His career began in the early 18th century, coinciding with the Baroque period of music, his music is considered to be more in the classical vein. The majority of his over 500 compositions are for piano, with a few for harpsichord and fuller orchestration. He is highly regarded as a nimble composer with spiritual virtuosity, containing influences from Iberian folk music.
