Wladimir Kaminer is a Russian-born German writer and disc jokey who has been a prominent figure of the Berlin intelligentsia scene since moving to the city in 1990. Though Russian is Kaminer's first language, all of his writings have been in German, primarily focusing on the plights of common people, oftentimes focusing on individuals of Jewish origin. Being a person of the people, who holds regular readings at cafes and weekly radio shows, Kaminer has felt an obligation to help the Berlin people, even staging an unsuccessful bid for mayor of Germany in 2011.
