San Francisco's Jefferson Starship rose out of the ashes of Jefferson Airplane in 1970, carrying the classic, psychedelic flavor of the counterculture 1960s into a new decade. Led by Paul Kantner, co-founder of both the Airplane and Starship incarnations, the band blends pop rock, folk and psychedelia into one familiar rock and roll sound. Since releasing its first official album, Dragon Fly, in 1974, the group saw an impressive array of lineups yet somehow managed to release nearly an album a year until its dissolution in 1984. Jefferson Starship reunited in 1992 and released its first album in over a decade, Windows of Heaven, in 1998. Returning to Kantner's protest song roots, the band released its tenth studio album, 2008's Jefferson's Tree of Liberty, and continues to spread its signature sound on international tours.
