Giselle is a classic balletic piece that depicts the tale of a young maiden trying to protect her lover from an ill fate from beyond the grave. Giselle dies after being deceived about her lover’s true identity and her lover Albrecht is menaced by evil female spirits that have sentenced him to death. But death does not stop their love, as its power is revealed throughout the story. The libretto was inspired by number of different short stories and poems, premiering as a ballet in Paris in 1841. The most commonly presented version today features the choreography of Marius Petipa's revivals that showed in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
