Eve Ensler's revolutionary celebration of womanhood and the female body has been translated into many different languages and performed in thousands of cities all around the world. The play is composed of a series of monologues originally produced in 1996, which has since been amended and annexed by the playwright Ensler. The monologues deal with issues of female sexuality, identity, sexual violence, coming of age and women's liberation, composed from a series of interviews and workshops conducted by Ensler with women of all ages. The Vagina Monologues has also become the center of a movement called V Day, a worldwide event that takes place on or around Valentine's Day to raise awareness about violence against women and its prevention.
