Although the Nanaimo Dragonboat Festival didn't first begin until 2003, dragon boat racing actually originated in China some 2400 years ago. Besides cheering on more than 70 paddleboat racers, festival-goers can enjoy plenty of live music, traditional dance, a beer garden, and plenty of food vendors. The annual three-day event at Maffeo Sutton Park sees around 2500 paddlers and 10,000 attendees, with all the proceeds given to charities that treat and care for breast cancer patients.
