Brazilian composer and singer Djavan was born into poverty in the town of Alagoas in 1949. Introduced to music by his mother at an early age, Djavan picked up the viola and taught himself how to play, eventually learning other instruments, then playing venues with a Beatles cover band. The musician moved to Rio de Janeiro in his early 20s with the hopes of making it big and was hired to write and sing the music for local soap operas. It wasn't until the late 70s that he had his big break and was recognized as a composer and musician in his own right. Djavan would go on to release several albums and perform throughout Brazil for much of his life. While he is not as famous in other parts of the world, he does tour outside of his home country on occasion and his Brazilian pop performances are not to be missed.
