The Fanø Kite Fliers Meeting is held every year in June and for four days, the skies of the island are crowded with kites colorful, fanciful and staggering in their engineering savvy. The festival attracts kite enthusiast from all over Europe and the world, and is considered the unofficial start of the tourist season. As such, the hostelries and hotels of the island are full to capacity and the shopkeepers and vendors that make their living from the town's tourist industry show their establishments and wares at their best, freshly prepared for the dawning season. The kites themselves are well worth the trip as they range from simple yet enchanting childrens' toys to marvels of the craft that are often larger than human size and as elaborate as well-built machines.
