On the eve of All Saints Day (November 1st), hundreds of people get together in the Plaza de Anaya and look up at the New Cathedral. What's going on up there? On October 31, 1755, Lisbon was struck by an earthquake, which made even Salamanca tremble. The people took refuge in the cathedral and the bells tolled by themselves. The little bell in the belfry, which can only ring if you enter from the outside, also rang out. As there were no casualties in Salamanca, the Cabildo Catedralicio (Cathedral Council) declared that on the eve of All Saints, one person would climb up to ring the bell in the belfry to thank God.
