The six-piece newgrass outfit Railroad Earth is a New Jersey-based band that takes its name from the Jack Kerouac short story "October in the Railroad Earth." Formed in 2001, the band combines elements of Americana, bluegrass, rock and jazz but is primarily known as a jam band due to its live improvisation at shows. After recording a five track demo, the band immediately secured a spot at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and released its debut album The Black Bear Sessions. Railroad Earth has since released several LPs of its rootsy, Americana brand of music including its critically acclaimed follow-up record, Bird In A House.
