Born Caleb Zackery Toliver in Texas, Don Toliver started making music in 2017. His first project was a collaboration with rapper Yungjosh93 on the mixtape Playa Familia. He followed it up with his solo singles "I Gotta" and "Diva" later in 2017. The singles helped catch the eye of Atlantic Records, who signed Toliver in March 2018. His first label-backed single "Make Sumn," "Checks" and "Holdin' Steel" were released soon after. His major-label debut Donny Womack was released in August, the same year. He was roped in to feature on rapper Travis Scott's track "Can't Say" from the LP Astroworld. It was this collaboration that became the tipping point and gave Toliver's career a new direction. He signed with Cactus Jack Records and with the help of Scott's constant support and promotion, soon bagged spots at major festivals. After returning to the scene in 2019, he released singles like "Best You Had" and "No Idea." His second solo effort Heaven or Hell, was released in March 2020.
