By blending elements of experimental rock, gothic, neo-classical and world music, the Australian group Dead Can Dance established itself as one of the more pioneering avant-garde groups of its generation. Formed in Melbourne by Lisa Gerrald and Brendan Perry in 1981, it wasn't long before the two moved to London after feeling the artistic trappings of Australia. In the UK, the duo was signed by the seminal alternative rock label 4AD, and in 1984, Dead Can Dance released its eponymously-titled debut album. Because of a distribution issue, the LP wasn't released in the United States, but because of the group's forward-thinking approach to composition, the album has widely been cited as being a quintessential gothic classic. The duo would go on to release interesting recorded material and receive consecutive praise for its work until breaking up in 1998. Dead Can Dance has since reunited on rare occasions, most notably in 2005 when the group went on tour in Europe and North America.
