Orville Richard Burrell is a Jamaican-born singer/songwriter and rapper who releases music under the moniker Shaggy. Shortly after relocating to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 18, he enlisted in the US Marine Crops and served in the Persian Gulf War, during which he embraced his affinity for singing to endure the monotony of military service. Upon returning to the states he decided to pursue music as a career and released his debut album Pure Pleasure, in 1993. Shaggy saw his first major hit with the title track of the Grammy Award-winning album Boombastic, in 1995, and became a certified pop star with his 2000 album Hot Shot. His fusion of reggae, hip-hop, R&B and pop sounds, particularly on tracks like "Angel" and "Wasn't Me," resonated with a world-wide audience throughout the decade. Although his mainstream appeal has faded into the 2010s, he continues to release his signature brand of contemporary R&B on albums such as 2012's Rise.
