Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was the main proponent of Turkish Independence. Victory Day celebrates the victory of Turkey over the invading Greek army, under the leadership of Ataturk in 1922. The Independence War soon followed, and Turkey saw the defeat of the Ottoman Dynasty. August 30th marks Victory Day every year. Citizens engage in festivities and celebrate the spirit of independence.
