Famed as one of the greatest comic operas of all-time, Gioachino Rossini's 1775 score was accompanied by a libretto based on Pierre Beaumarchais's play of the same name. The two-act opera buffe combines spoken dialogue with music, exploring the exploits of the lovestruck Count Almaviva pursuing his love, Rosina. The count appears to her under several disguises, not wanting his wealth to influence her feelings. With the help of Figaro, a former servant, Count Almaviva schemes to see Rosina, barely escaping the jealous gaze of her guardian. The ensuing madness plays out with masterful scoring, making this opera a classic that is still widely performed to this day.
