Founded in 1939 as the Winnipeg Ballet Club, the organization's intention was to tour and showcase its dancers to various cities around North America, as opposed to staying planted in one particular city. After touring Canada and proving itself as one of the world' premier ballet companies, it was received the title of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The organization completed its first tour of the United States in 1954 and in that same year the RWB's rented venue was devastated by fire--destroying costumes, set designs and sheets of original music. While this incident might serve as a hindrance to some ballet organizations, the RWB persevered and continued to tour as strongly as ever. Because of the company's steadfast resolve to stay on the road, the RWB has earned the title of the longest running ballet organization in North America. With a continuously evolving stage program, the RWB is a sure-fire pleaser for those who enjoy quality ballet.
