The epicenter of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Medieval era, the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca has hosted many markets and celebrations. The vast square is surrounded on all sides by splendid historic edifices, centered around a towering monument to the Battle of Vitoria (1813). The plaza remains a central meeting place for the people of Vitoria-Gasteiz; its quaint cafes and darling shops the cherished enclave of cultured wanderers. The Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is also the site of the annual Fiestas de la Virgen Blanca - a much-anticipated event that sees the descent of the Celedon into the midst of a cheering crowd, kicking off a six-day celebration that takes place between the 4th and 9th of August. On any given day, tourists can be seen posing for a photo-op by the monumental vertical garden that spells out the name of Vitoria-Gasteiz, alongside locals hobnobbing at a corner cafe at the bustling Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. This public square lies adjacent to Plaza de España, while its north flank is dominated by the stately Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel.
