The town fortifications once had a total of 40 towers. Today only three are left, of which the Schnetztor tower is the most recent. It dates essentially from the 15th century and was the checkpoint in the Middle Ages, because of its direct proximity to the Swiss border. The massive stone building has a little wooden bell tower on the ridge of the roof.
