Place de la Cathédrale

This is the tourist area par excellence, and the tourist office knows it well, having set up its offices here. Completely pedestrianised, this large square holds some of the jewels of Strasbourg, such as, of course, the cathedral, which is lit up at night, but also the Cerf pharmacy, the oldest pharmacy in Europe, with its wooden beams from the Middle Ages. Another half-timbered house is situated next door, the famous Kammerzell house, with its ground floor that dates back to 1465. It was the ideal Alsace house at the start of the Renaissance. Inside, the house has been transformed into a traditional hotel and restaurant. In winter, the cathedral square is one of the places which hosts the famous Christmas market, or Christkindelsmärik. In summer, countless street artists of unbounded resourcefulness gather here. It is worth noting that it is always windy at the foot of the cathedral!
