The strip of land along the coast between Faro and Sagres is characterised by cragged cliffs, fascinating rock formations and peaceful bays. The north African climate has long attracted settlers such as the Celts, Romans and Moors, but it was the Moors who had the greatest influence on southwestern Europe. These days it is not only the seaside that attracts beachgoers and surfers, but for many the mountain villages in the hinterlands are also well worth a detour.
