Anna Göldi was the last known woman to be executed for witchcraft in Europe. Like so many others accused of witchcraft before her, Göldi was innocent of this crime and was officially exonerated in 2008, 226 years after her death. Her story is a tragic one, and the Anna Göldi-Museum seeks to teach about her life and about the cruel misconceptions that devastated Europe for centuries, leading to the deaths of many innocent women and men. In 1765, Anna Göldi took a job with a magistrate in Glarus and worked for him and his family for 17 years. After so many years of loyal work, the magistrate suddenly accused Göldi of planting needles in his daughter's food by means of witchcraft. Göldi, of course, fought these allegations and ran for her life, but was captured and tortured until she gave a "confession" and was tragically and wrongfully killed. It is now believed that the magistrate had an affair with Göldi and used the accusation of witchcraft to cover his tracks. Today, visitors to the museum can learn about Anna Göldi, and about humanitarian efforts that are supported through the Anna Göldi Foundation.
