Today, Exeter is best known for two of its former undergraduates: the writer J R R Tolkein, and Roger Bannister, who became the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes in 1954. In fact, the history of the college goes back much further, to the early 14th century. Founded by the Bishop of Exeter in 1314, the college was mostly rebuilt in the 17th century, but you can still see the medieval gatehouse, Palmer's tower. The College not only provides teaching.Food in its Dining Hall, and accommodation on the main site for all First Years and some Third Years is available for students. For talented musicians, the college has a rich musical life.The college celebrates special events for our students, such as Burns Night, Thanksgiving, Diwali and Chinese New Year.
