La Pointe du Hoc today has a memorial and a museum dedicated to the Allied solders who climbed up the 30m cliff and destroyed the guns and captured the point. La Pointe du Hoc had to be captured as it was the highest point between Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, the landing beaches on D-Day during World War II. The German army had fortified the area and could have fired at the landing troops at Omaha had the artillery pieces not been destroyed.
