Glenrock Lagoon is a traditional territory of the Awabakal people. Its original name, Pillapay-Kullaitaran, or "Valley of the Palms," comes from the region's once prolific Cabbage Palm growth. The current moniker also offers a hint about the landscape, as European explorers named the site Glenrock Lagoon for its slender shape and rugged terrain. Archeological evidence of the region's long history can be found scattered about the area, including such gems as tool-making and gathering site remains. Glenrock Lagoon is a popular recreation spot for Newcastle residents and tourists alike. Visitors to the area can enjoy beautiful views at the fertile lagoon and nearby Glenrock State Conservation Area.
