Construction of this fortress (designed to keep an eye on the neighboring Welsh) began in the 11th Century. It was later enlarged and was for a time the center of government for Wales and the border counties. Abandoned in the 17th Century, and in ruins today, it remains a popular tourist attraction. Milton's Comus was first performed here in 1634 and a tradition of annual performances of this play continues. The town of Ludlow is a largely unspoilt market town and worth a visit in its own right. Opening times vary by season, so be sure to check their website before visiting.
