The Plum Grove Historic House served as a retirement home for Governor Robert Lucas and also the childhood home of author Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd. Built in the year 1844 the house was owned by a number people till finally coming under the ownership of the State Historical Society of Iowa. The house is maintained by the Johnson County Historical Society and is open to the general public showcasing the restored interiors. The land around the house has been under archaeological research since there have been findings like house additions, outbuildings, and animal remains.
