Built as a monastery in 1144 by the Premonstratensians, it is one of the oldest Late Romanesque styled brick buildings with a brick architecture of Brandenburg style. Secular priests had resided here in its time of inception, post which this monastery became a hub for prayer services. The monastery kept getting additions till about 1250, marking the completion of the entire complex.
