Ellis Square

Originally dating back to the 18th Century, Ellis Square was initially called Decker Square in honor of Sir Matthew Decker. It was later rechristened to its present name as an ode to Sir Henry Ellis, Georgia's second Royal Governor. For nearly two centuries it was a buzzing spot with markets round the clock attracting people to this riverside square. However it was turned into a parking garage in the 1960s. Thankfully, the square was restored in 2005 and revitalized with water features, a giant chess set and picnic tables. There is also a statue of John Herndon “Johnny” Mercer, celebrated native record producer and songwriter. Indulge in some people watching, enjoy some market shopping at the adjacent City Market or nosh at any of the dining establishments flanking this square.
