With a history that can be traced as far back as the 13th Century, Papenburg is a town that neatly combines modernism with old world charm. Witness the amazing cruise liner ships on display at the Meyer Werft, one of the most popular landmarks of the area. Another picture-worthy landmark is the Bockwindmuhle, an ancient windmill predominantly made out of wood. You can also explore the windmill from within and marvel at this historic structure. The best part however, is the city's architecture itself, with a 40-kilometer (25-mile) canal running through the city, punctuated by rustic bridges. Outdoor enthusiasts can take a bike tour via some of the well established and picturesque trails traversing the city.
