Formerly known as Altdorf, the town of Weingarten acquired its current name in 1865, likely spurred by the identity of its notable namesake-the Weingarten Abbey. The abbey, its most significant landmark, is a baroque beauty and is renowned as the largest baroque church north of the alps. Some of Weingarten's other attractions include the Alemans Museum, which display facts and exhibits from the life of the Alemanni tribes on the Upper Rhine River, and the Schlössle, a 16th-century Imperial palace.
