Salem

Located not far away from Lake Constance, Salem has existed since the 12th Century although the region was settled much before this. The city came into being with the establishment of the Salem Abbey and expanded as it gained prominence through the years. The original abbey no longer remains due to a devastating fire that destroyed the structures the late 17th Century. Nonetheless, the massive complex that was rebuilt is a sight to behold and one of the city's highlights. Other prominent attractions in the city include the Fire Brigade Museum, the Affenberg, which is a lush sanctuary for barbary macaques as well as the Feuchtmayer Museum.
