TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Founded in the 12th Century, this district capital borders the German states of Bavaria and Thuringia, and the country of Czech Republic. It rose to prominence as a textile and lace-making center during the 19th Century, however suffered for years after the Second World War. It thrives today as a university town and an architectural gem, home to a number of beautifully restored buildings that include the Alte Rathaus, the Friedensbrücke and the Malzhaus, a former beer-manufacturing unit converted into a cultural center. For a glimpse into its lace-making history, a stop at the Embroidery Machine Museum is a must.
